The Weekly Debate (18): The Never Put Down Syndrome

Today's weekly debate is going to be short, mainly because I have to go pack (arghh). But it's also a simple question: Do you suffer from the "never put down" syndrome?

I often fall asleep reading... // source

Never put down syndrome   //ˈnevər po͝ot doun ˈsinˌdrōm

1. The mindset of generally being unable to put down a book without finishing it. Common symptoms include reading until the wee hours of the morning (or all night and morning), continuing to read despite how much one's enjoys the book, and a compelling need to tie a neat bow on the story before closing the pages. Other symptoms vary.

 2. A sleep-depriving syndrome that ails this blogger, and causes her to frequently read until at least one or two in the morning.

If it's a book I love, then oh yeah, I'll read until I can't see straight from tiredness. :) I'm a pretty ruthless Do-Not-Finisher though. If I'm not enjoying a book then I'll stop reading it. Life's too short and there are too many good books out there to spend time on a book I'm not feeling.
I definitely suffer from it, but I have found an appropriate medication to help me combat those late night symptoms. I never read a book that I have never read before right before I go to bed. Instead, I keep a couple of well read books on my bedside table. You know, those books that you have read 100 times before. Sometimes you flick to certain parts because they are your favourite sections, you can remember which significant event occurs on which page.

Having read the book so many times before, I find it easier to put down and go to sleep. Its the best medicine for someone suffering from The Never Put Down Syndrome
I often suffer from this syndrome, but only on the weekends. I cannot read into the wee hours of the morning due to a very quirky biological condition I have had ever since I went back to college in my 40's. This condition began due to the rigors of going to school all day, coming home and taking care of my small children in the evening. By the time I fed, bathed, and help the kids with their homework, I was too tired to study, so I went to bed with the kids and got up early each day to do my homework. This has become a habit. I now go to bed early because if I try to read after I get home from work I fall asleep. When I get up in the morning (around 2 or 3 AM), I do my blogging and read if I have time. Otherwise I read all day on the weekends. So this syndrome only affects me on Saturday and Sunday, which makes it very difficult to do housework, or grocery shopping, and other chores that I do not accomplish throughout the week.
Absolutely! I suffered from it not so long ago when reading Divergent! When I'm experiencing this I will be completely determined to finish it, I don't care that it's 6am and that at 9am I have college. I'll fix myself a cup of tea if my eyes are closing and make sure I finish that book. I'll often bookmark some beautiful quotes that I will come across and sigh at the thought of having to pick only 3 or 4 out of them all for the review. I'll finish the book and sit in silence in a while collecting my thoughts and taking everything in, and then get really annoyed because there is no sequel, or because there is a sequel and I have to wait another year for it!! :D Great topic dearie :)
Oh yes. Never-Put-Down syndrome and I are old friends. Or considering how sleep deprived it's caused me to be in the past, maybe I should say old enemies...
Oh no, I am so glad I don't have this! I can never not finish a book at all once I've started, so I can drag reading a bad book for weeks, but luckily I can put a book down to sleep haha! Although, if it is a really good book and it's getting into the early hours of the morning I'm like just one more chapter..but it never is! :)
Oh yeah, totally. The other night I slept till 2 AM reading Clockwork Angel. I was so determined to finish it that night! It was so darn good anyway and I ended up really really loving it! Haha.
I am so guilty of this!
